Taiwan emissions to soar

Taiwan's carbon emissions are set to grow by more than 5 per cent.
The government has recently approved plans to expand capacity at two coal plants and one steel plant, which will increase the country's greenhouse gas emissions by 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Meanwhile the Environmental Protection Agency is considering whether to approve an application by oil firm CPC Taiwan Corp. to build a new petrochemical plant.

The government of President Ma Ying-jeou has proposed legislation that would commit the country to first stabilising, then reducing emissions.

The government's target is to restrict emissions to 2008 levels in 2020; cut them back to 2000 levels by 2025; and bring emissions down to half of 2000 levels by mid-century.

The legislation would also pave the way for an emissions trading scheme to be introduced in 2013.

But the bill is stalling in parliament amid the global economic recession, and no progress has been made for the past five months.

Taiwan emitted 305.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2005, an increase of almost 140 per cent on 1990 levels.
